PRESS RELEASE - 1st February 2013
Rotting Naval ships in Portsmouth worth 2.5million in scrap if sunk as artificial reefs could generate £100,000,000 in VAT alone for the UK !
It’s taken three years to get all permissions in place to allow Weymouth and Portland Wreck to Reef to create a multi faceted artificial reef three miles to the east of Weymouth. We are the only organisation to have been granted such a licence in the UK by the Marine Management Organisation.
Within Wreck to Reefs square kilometre of sea bed, permissions have been obtained for a Lobster re-stocking Reef, a Quarry Reef, a Solace Reef and the sinking of two ex-naval warships.
The lobster re-stocking reef is already a reality and was laid in March last year (2012). Baby lobsters donated by the National Lobster Hatchery, will be released this summer.
Now all those permissions are in place, Weymouth and Portland Wreck to Reef are now looking at ways of funding the purchase of the two ships we have permissions for. We are working on several angles, one of which is outlined below.
We are hoping that one of our ideas will be successful, but we realise that it is essential that we now shout as loudly as we can and let, not just divers, but anyone who believes in artificial reefs know what we have achieved already and what we still have to do.
Solving a ‘local’ problem can sometimes create a vacuum, an issue in the next town, or in our case, the next coastal community. Wreck to Reef is very mindful of this. With support from a national level it is quite possible that in a very short period of time, those ex-naval warships that are rotting away in Portsmouth could help generate tens of millions of pounds for coastal communities from Portland Bill to Skegness.
These ships are steeped in history and have served us well. It is not time to look at the rest of the world and finally lay these ships to rest in British waters as artificial reefs?
This is how we have outlined the question on the Wreck to Reef website.
An artificial reef for Weymouth and Portland and a possible blue print for the whole of the UK.
Through the three year process of obtaining permissions, Weymouth and Portland Wreck to Reef have by coincidence created a new way to manage an area of sea-bed by the people for the people.
It has been suggested that Weymouth and Portland Wreck to Reef now has a blue print that should be adopted across the whole of the United Kingdom.
The jewel in the crown of these reef sanctuaries, is of course the once jewels of our naval history, our warships.
Our ex naval ships could be cleaned and made ready responsibly here in the UK and would help create much needed habitat for our ailing marine environments and bring decades of revenue to our coastal communities.
The UK is sadly out of step with the rest of the world with regards to giving ships as 'deeds of gifts' to any organisation. Portugal and Thailand sunk four ships in 2012, with Portugal planning to sink another two warships this year.
It is hoped by signing this petition you will help Wreck to Reef change the British Governments view.
Please remember, this is not just about another ship and it is not just about one town on the south coast.
Please visit www.wrecktoreef.co.uk for details about the whole project.

PRESS RELEASE - 24th June 2008
The B+B Collection is opening a second property on the seafront in Weymouth, Dorset, as part of the company’s expansion plans to open at key tourism locations in the UK.
Due to open in July 11th 2008, the B+B Weymouth will follow the award winning concept of B+B Belgravia which has been awarded Gold for the best B&B concept two year in a row at the Visit London Awards. Weymouth is one of the UK’s historic seaside towns, and known to be where King George III spent his summers. It also played a key role in the D-Day invasions, and the whole area is one of great historic castles and houses.
Maintaining much of the original grade II listed building, the interior has been transformed into a contemporary but sympathetic design that is the signature of the award winning B+B boutique concept. In addition to the 26 en suite bedrooms, the B+B includes a light and airy guest lounge with sea views, a large breakfast room with breakfast cooked to order, complimentary tea selection and fresh coffee 24 hours a day, Wi-Fi Internet access everywhere, daily newspapers and a library of books and DVDs. The bedrooms have free-view TV, guests can make local calls free of charge from their room and the technically-able can enjoy the latest Teleadapt media hub technology.
"We had been looking for a property by the sea for a few years; when London won the 2012 Olympic Games and it was announced that Weymouth would host the sailing competition, it was obvious that Weymouth would become the next "hot spot" on the south coast.
"The B+B Collection is the brainchild of a group of like-minded professional hoteliers who have rewritten the rules for a new style of Bed and Breakfast hotels for the 21st century. We have created a new brand that offers a quality, contemporary environment at affordable rates for the discerning business traveler and the cost-conscious tourist alike. Design, service, quality, comfort and character are all part of our philosophy." Says Sales & Marketing Director, Sue Bertram
"This year we have seen an increase in domestic bookings compared to 2007 in our London property" adds Penny Brown, Managing Director. "People’s travel habits are changing and many are adopting a sense of responsibility to the environment by actively reducing their carbon footprint and taking holidays in the UK. The cost and hassle of delayed flights abroad versus a holiday in the UK, makes us optimistic for a busy first season in Weymouth".
About The B+B Collection - The B+B Collection was conceived after the success of the award-winning pilot project, B+B Belgravia, which opened in London in 2004. The B+B Collection was established in 2005. There are currently three operational properties within the portfolio: B+B Belgravia & [email protected], B+B Weymouth which opened in 2008 and the newest addition, B+B Edinburgh which opened 1st August 2011.
All the B+Bs are historic listed buildings with beautifully designed contemporary interiors; more suitable sites are being sought. The primary objective is to deliver a modern, well-designed product that "breaks the mould," and provides an innovative and stylish alternative to the outdated bed and breakfasts and a viable and affordable option to the predictable chain hotel. Design, service, quality and comfort are all part of the philosophy.
